Driving up to a property that's clearly loved — a solid timber sign at the gate with the property name burnt or engraved into the grain — says something a printed sign never quite manages. It's become one of our most requested categories, and for good reason: a timber property sign is built to last decades outdoors, not just look good for a season.
Here's what to know if you're considering one for your own property, farm, or acreage.
Why timber works for property signs
Property signs live a hard life. They're mounted at the road, exposed to full sun, wind, rain, and in a lot of cases, dust from the driveway itself. Unlike printed or painted signage, an engraved timber sign doesn't fade or peel — the lettering is cut into the wood itself, so it ages with the timber rather than degrading faster than it.
We use Grade 1 outdoor-rated Australian hardwoods for exactly this reason:
Birdseye Stringybark — our most popular choice for large property signs, durable with a distinctive grain
Red Ironbark — dense, dark, and extremely weather-resistant
Spotted Gum — a warmer tone that suits homesteads and farm entrances alike
What goes on a property sign
Most property signs include the property name and, often, the street address or lot number. Beyond that, popular additions include:
A relevant image — sheep, cattle, horses, native wildlife, or farm equipment, engraved directly into the design
Established/since dates — for properties that have been in the family for generations
Family or business name — for working farms that also trade under the property name
Some of our most memorable property signs have combined all three — a property name, a family surname, and a farm animal or brand mark, laid out as a single cohesive design.
Sizing for farm entrances and driveways
Property signs tend to run larger than house or garden signs, simply because they're often read from a moving car at some distance. Common sizes include:
Standard entrance signs: around 70cm-1 metre wide
Large statement signs: 1.2 metres to 1.8 metres, sometimes made by joining two boards side by side for an oversized single sign
Address/number signs: smaller, paired alongside a larger name sign, or standalone for letterbox-side placement
For anything over roughly a metre in length or heavier signs, standard postage isn't always possible — we'll let you know if your sign needs courier delivery and provide a postcode-based quote before you commit.
Mounting and installation options
Since property signs are usually the first thing visitors see, how they're mounted matters as much as the sign itself:
Wall or post-mounted — hanger holes or pilot holes included as standard
On weatherproof stakes — ideal for freestanding signs at a gate or driveway entrance, with rot-proof paint applied to the underground portion of the stake
Hanging with eyebolts and chain — for signs mounted under an existing structure like a gate frame or verandah
Finish options
As with all our signs, you can choose:
Full weatherproofing — strongly recommended for anything at a farm entrance exposed to the elements year-round
Natural or burnt natural edge — keeps the organic shape of the timber, popular for a genuine rural look
Straight edge — a cleaner, more uniform finish if that suits your entrance better

Built for the long haul
A property sign isn't something you replace every few years — done properly, it should outlast the fence it's mounted on. That's the whole idea behind using solid Australian hardwood and full weatherproofing: a sign that looks as good in ten years as it did the day it went up.
